Aromatherapy for beginners: how to get started with essential oils

Scent is the fastest route to how you feel: one breath of lavender and your shoulders drop. With a diffuser and a few good oils you can bring that effect into your home every day. Here's how to start.

Step 1: choose a diffuser

An ultrasonic aroma diffuser turns water and a few drops of oil into a fine, cool mist. Choose a 300–500 ml tank for 6–10 hours of operation. Want some ambience too? A flame-effect diffuser combines mist with the look of a fireplace.

Step 2: start with these three oils

  • Lavender — the classic relaxation scent, ideal for the evening
  • Eucalyptus — refreshing, pleasant when you have a blocked nose and in the morning
  • Citrus (orange or lemon) — bright and energising, perfect for your workspace

An essential oil set with several scents lets you discover what suits you without spending much.

Step 3: get the dose right

Rule of thumb: 3 to 5 drops per 100 ml of water. More isn't better — a subtle scent is more pleasant than an overwhelming one.

Make it a habit

Link your diffuser to a fixed moment: eucalyptus when you get up, citrus while you work, lavender an hour before bed. That's how you build routines that actually make a difference.
