As soon as the mercury climbs above 25 degrees, so does the number of poorly slept nights. Your body needs to cool down to fall asleep — and that's hard in a stuffy bedroom. These six tips help right away.
1. Cool your bedroom during the day
Keep windows, curtains and blinds closed on the sunny side during the day. Air the room late in the evening and early in the morning, when the outside air is cooler than inside.
2. Choose breathable bedding
Cotton and linen breathe; synthetic fabrics trap heat. A silk sleep mask also feels more pleasant in summer than a thicker one: silk is light, soft and cool against the skin — and keeps out early morning light.
3. Use targeted cooling
A fan aimed directly at your body feels nice but can cause muscle stiffness. Aim it across the room instead, or use a portable neck fan during your evening routine — cooling your neck and head, exactly where it counts.
4. Shower lukewarm, not cold
An ice-cold shower before bed backfires: your body compensates by warming up. A lukewarm shower lets your skin cool down gradually afterwards — the ideal cue for sleep.
5. Mask summer noises
Open windows mean street noise, birds at 5am and buzzing mosquitoes. A white noise machine masks those sounds with a constant, soothing hum, and sleep earplugs block out the rest.
6. Stick to your evening routine
Especially in hot weather, a fixed routine matters: screens off, lights dimmed, ten minutes to unwind. A breathing lamp helps you settle into calm breathing within a few minutes.
