What Does an Acupressure Mat Do? Effects and Use

Oefeningen op een mat thuis

A mat covered in plastic points you lie on — it sounds illogical, but acupressure mats are hugely popular for good reason among people with tension in the back, neck and shoulders.

How does it work?

The hundreds of points simultaneously stimulate thousands of pressure points in your skin. Your body responds with increased blood flow and the release of endorphins — your body's own relaxation and pain-relief hormone. The first two minutes can feel intense; after that, a warm, deep relaxation sets in.

What can it help with?

  • Tension in the neck, shoulders and lower back after a day at the screen
  • Trouble relaxing or falling asleep
  • Stiff muscles after exercise

How to use it

Start with 10 minutes a day, lying on a thin T-shirt. After a few sessions you can use it directly on bare skin — that's when the effect is strongest. Many users combine the mat with a breathing exercise or calm music. The matching pillow applies the same principle to your neck.

Who is it for?

Almost anyone can use an acupressure mat. If you're pregnant, take blood thinners, or have very sensitive skin, it's best to check with your doctor first.
