LED Face Mask: How It Works and What to Expect

LED-gezichtsmasker en lichttherapie voor de huid

You see them everywhere on TikTok and Instagram: futuristic masks glowing with red or blue light. LED light therapy originally comes from professional skin clinics and is now also available for home use. But what does it actually do?

What does an LED face mask do?

An LED mask shines light of specific wavelengths onto the skin. Unlike sunlight, it contains no UV radiation — so it's not a tanning bed. Each colour has its own use:

Red light is the most widely used and is associated with supporting the skin's natural collagen production and a fresher, more even-looking complexion.

Blue light is mainly used for congested, oily skin and blemishes.

Other colours (green, yellow, purple) are used for combined purposes; a mask with multiple settings lets you experiment with what your skin responds well to.

Realistic expectations

Be honest with yourself: a home mask is milder than a professional treatment. Results require consistency — think 3 to 5 sessions of 10–15 minutes a week, over several weeks. Many users also value it as a moment of relaxation: fifteen minutes lying down with your mask on counts as well-deserved me-time.

How to use it safely

Use the mask on clean, dry skin with no cream underneath. Close your eyes or use the included eye protection. Build up gradually and stop if you notice irritation. Are you taking medication that makes your skin light-sensitive, or do you have a skin condition? Check with your GP or dermatologist first.
